Six-Word Story

Tried. Failed. Tried Again. Still Waiting.

Shows experience of facing challenges and not giving up. It takes place in my journey as a student, where I keep trying even when things don’t go as planned. I am the main character, dealing with struggles while people around me either support or doubt me. The conflict is about failing and feeling frustrated but still choosing to keep going. The theme is about patience and determination because success takes time, but I won’t stop trying.

Growing Stronger

Journal Entry - Day 1 (March 6, 2025)

Before, I never really understand what it felt like to be compared to others. When I was studying in Angono Rizal, I didn’t feel any pressure. I just went to school and lived my life without worrying if I was good enough. But everything changed when my mother took me away from my father so I could study in Makati. That was when people started comparing me, especially to my older sister. She was smart and always received awards, while I didn’t. No matter how hard I tried, it felt like I was always behind her. These comparisons made me doubt myself, and I started to feel like I wasn’t good enough.

Looking back, I know I am not the same person I was before. Being compared to others and feeling pressured to do better changed me. But instead of breaking me, it made me stronger. It helped me understand myself and taught me that my worth is not based on others. I realized that no matter how much people compare me, I have my own strengths. I may not be like my sister, but that doesn’t mean I am not good enough. In the end, I realized that struggles happen not to bring me down but to help me grow into a better version of myself.

Journal Entry - Day 2 (March 7, 2025)

Losing a friend felt like going through a storm. We were very close, sharing secrets and trusting each other. I told my secrets to my friend, thinking she would keep them. But because of a misunderstanding, our friendship ended. Later, I found out that she told my secrets to her new friend. It hurt me a lot, and I felt betrayed. I kept asking myself why she would do that to me. I was sad and confused, not knowing if I would ever feel okay again. It was painful to lose someone I once considered an important part of my life.

Looking back, I don’t even remember how I got through it, but I know it changed me. Just like in the quote, I became a different person after that storm. I realized that not all friendships last forever, and that’s okay. Some people will stay, and some will leave, but every experience teaches something meaningful. I also learned to be more careful about who I trust. Although it hurt, I now see that the pain helped me become stronger. That storm was not just about losing a friend it was about discovering my own strength.

A Promise Contract

I promise myself that before the fourth quarter ends I will be more productive even though I am struggling. I will stay focused and continue studying no matter how challenging the lessons is. I know that I have to face many difficulties in studying, but I will not let it stop me from reaching my goals. I will keep working hard and believe in myself, knowing that my efforts will lead to success. And shall lead me to a better future.

Trapped by Power

Have you ever felt trapped by your own father’s power, as if your life was never truly yours? This horrifying reality unfolds in Kisapmata, the 1981 film directed by Mike de Leon and written by Clodualdo del Mundo Jr. Based on Nick Joaquin’s true crime story The House on Zapote Street, the film tells the story of Mila (Charo Santos), a young woman struggling to escape the control of her father, Sgt. Dadong (Vic Silayan). Despite getting married, Mila remains trapped in her father’s home, where he dictates her every move. The film reveals the dangers of extreme control within families, where a father’s authority becomes abusive. Through its chilling story, Kisapmata shows how some families are ruled by fear rather than love. A patriarchal system within the household reinforces the father’s full control over everything, including decision-making, gender biases, and domestic abuse. The film serves as a warning about the consequences of letting one person dominate a family."

Watching Kisapmata made me realize how terrifying it is when a father treats his family like his property. Mila, even as an adult, is forced to obey her father’s every command. One of the most disturbing scenes is when Dadong refuses to let Mila leave, showing that he believes she belongs to him. The mother, although aware of the abuse, remains silent something that also happens in real life. Many victims of domestic violence feel helpless because the people around them choose to ignore the problem. The movie also highlights how society fails to protect victims. The police, instead of helping, allow Dadong’s abusive behavior to continue. This film is a powerful reminder that abuse thrives when people refuse to speak up.

Even today, some families still follow a system where the father has complete control over his wife and children. Although times have changed, many women still experience restrictions on their freedom because of traditional beliefs. Domestic abuse and gender inequality remain serious issues in society. Kisapmata challenges us to question these outdated ideas and stand against abusive power in families. It reminds us that staying silent only allows oppression to continue. If we want a society built on respect and equality, we must break free from traditions that harm rather than protect.

A Short Reflection of Preludes

In Preludes by Daryll Delgado, the story shows Nenita's quiet strength in dealing with her unfaithful husband. From this story, I learned how important it is to stay strong and calm in difficult situations. It highlights the struggles women face in a society where men have more power.  Personally, it reminded me of times when keeping my cool in arguments helped avoid bigger problems. The most noticeable trait in Nenita is her quiet determination. Even though she is treated badly, she keeps doing her responsibilities without complaining, showing great strength. Her silence doesn’t mean weakness but shows her ability to endure hardship while keeping her dignity.

The author uses literary tools to add meaning to the story. Irony is shown when the judge’s widow, who is meant to represent justice, has an affair with Nenita’s husband. Symbolism appears in the medicinal leaves, which represent both life and death, and foreshadowing hints at the husband’s death. These elements make the story more interesting. The main theme of Preludes is about gender inequality and the expectations society puts on women. By looking at it through a feminist perspective, we can see how Nenita's silence represents how women are often expected to endure unfairness quietly. This happens in real life too, where women’s voices are silenced or ignored.

In conclusion, Preludes by Daryll Delgado shows the strength of women like Nenita who face an unfair world with quiet courage. Through tools like irony, symbolism, and foreshadowing, the story shows the struggles women face in a male-dominated society. Looking at it from a feminist point of view, I understood the message about gender inequality and how silence can be powerful. Preludes teaches us that sometimes silence speaks louder than words.
